Background:
Xie Shuibo is a Professor in Civil/Environmental Engineering at University of South China. He has an established track record for undertaking research in relation to the sustainability of the environment. Prof. Xie has achieved significant success in developing extensive industry collaborative links, undertaking research of relevance to uranium mining and the community and the translation of research outcomes for practical application. During the period 2003 – 14, he held the NNSFC funded in radioactive environmental protection. During the period 2005 – 15, he was the director of key laboratory of Hunan Province for Pollution Control and the Resource Utilization Technology. He also possesses eighteen years of professional experience in water security and fire protection technology.
Research achievements:
Published more than 150 scholarly publications, including journal papers, five books, book chapters and conference papers.
Received more than 17 millions (RMB) in research funding from the government and the corporate sector organizations for undertaking over 40 applied research projects.
Supervised more than 40 doctoral and research master students.
Broad field of research: Civil & environmental engineering
His research entails field investigations, laboratory experiments and computer modeling and simulations.
Research areas:
Within the broad field of civil/environmental engineering research, Professor Xie has focused on the following areas:
Environmental biotechnology, environmental chemistry, and nonlinear sciences
In-situ bioremediation and environmental assessment technology in acid in-situ leaching uranium mine. Radioactive waste treatment and disposal. Such as radioactives and other contaminants like uranium and non-radioactive residues in decommissioned mining area in leaching uranium mine
Wastewater recycling and water conservation and efficiency
Resilience of water infrastructure and water security
Water security and fire protection technology.
Prof. Xie’s research focuses on assessing the impacts of radionuclide migration on ecological environment including quantitative and qualitative impacts and the creation of adaptation strategies to cope with these changes in the form of policy development and management approaches for ‘future-proofing’.
Prof. Xie’s research focuses on investigations for understanding the behavior of pollutants through to knowledge of their impact. His research develops approaches and methods to assess and diagnose the causes, processes and pollutant sources, tools to assess exposure and to reduce human health risks, provide approaches to attain water quality standards and investigations for understanding and quantifying the treatment performance and the definition of treatment processes of water sensitive urban design systems. His research includes: development of analytical methods for water quality evaluation, characterizing water pollution processes, fate of pollutants in the environment and their impacts, and radioactive or radionuclide migration simulation.
Prof. Xie’s research focuses on the analysis of resilience of water supply infrastructure in meeting the quality and quantity challenges posed by population growth and urbanization in order to ensure water security to the community. His research includes: systems modeling of water supply infrastructure, resilience assessment of water supply infrastructure, and surrogate indictors of resilience.
